Food Insecurity is defined by the United States Department of Agriculture as the lack of access, at times, to enough food for an active, healthy life. Food insecurity is associated with numerous adverse social and health outcomes and is increasingly considered a critical public health issue. Key drivers of food insecurity include unemployment, poverty, and income shocks, which can prevent adequate access to food.
Food Equality Initiative (FEI) subsidizes a direct-to-door grocery delivery service utilizing Food Connect’s last-mile services for qualified clients through their Food Is Medicine Access Home (FIMH) program for individuals in Jackson (MO), Johnson (KS), and Wyandotte (KS) counties that screen positive for food insecurity.
The program aims to ease the financial and psychological strain of a diagnosis on individuals and families coping with diet treated illness.
“Food Connect’s last-mile delivery is integral to our program's success, and with it we were able to expand our Food as Medicine program to serve more of our community members managing chronic health conditions and food insecurity.” - Erin Martinez, CEO
