Due to the widespread effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, a record 54 million people in the United States are food insecure. That means that people in your community are unsure of where their next meal will come from and need help. Food pantries, food banks, homeless shelters, churches, and community centers across the country are working to provide food to all of those in need. As a result of increased unemployment and other pandemic effects, food pantries and similar organizations have experienced record increases in families and individuals visits. At the heart of the struggle is what food represents to us all during this turbulent time. “Food is still comfort. Food is routine. Food is family,” from a New York Times article about pantries as a lifeline, published October 20th.
At Food Connect, we help bridge the gap between surplus food and hunger. We partner with food vendors like restaurants and grocers with excess food / meals to ensure that donations reach food insecure families by delivering to both meal sites and homes. With Food Connect, meal sites report saving an average of $450 per week; which means they now have more resources to further support the community.
You can help us this month by volunteering to deliver food or becoming a meal sponsor. The link to sign up to volunteer is here, and the link to become a meal sponsor is here.
